Special thanks to Nathan Mohnke, the owner of the HP OfficeJet Pro 8028, who graciously lent us his computer printer when the Canon PIXMA TS6020 showcased on the left broke down just days before this performance.Duet for [Instrument] and Computer Printer is a piece that aims to highlight an underrepresented member of modern music-making: the electronic printer. Sheet music is typically printed before rehearsals and performances so musicians can be prepared, take notes, and practice their music. This duet thrusts the printer into the spotlight as the star performer, printing the music on stage for the performer - especially handy if anyone forgets their music. The piece also incorporates aleatoric elements, as the music is run through a program that changes some of the pitches in the minor mode section before it is printed. Each performance is different in terms of both musical content and instrumentation, allowing both performers to freely choose what melodic instrument or computer printer to play - although the piece works best when using a printer with a copy and/or scan function.
Duet for [Instrument] and Computer Printer was first premiered on November 15, 2019 in Harton Recital Hall at Belmont University and was later performed on March 13, 2021 in McAfee Concert Hall at Belmont University.
