Trombone Quartet

November 8, 2020

Soren Allen, alto trombone

Nathan Mohnke and Chase Carpenter, tenor trombones

Cassie Meredith, bass trombone

Trombone Quartet began as a short compositional exercise when Soren was frustrated by two things: (1) how many contemporary composers write impossible glissandi for the trombone, and (2) the lack of contemporary literature for the alto trombone. This piece is the result of these frustrations. Each glissando that is written in this piece can be performed naturally, with no breaks in the sound. The first movement is a chorale with a soft and solemn character. The second movement is much livelier in contrast and loosely follows the form of a fugue; take note as to how the subject – marked by a glissando – bounces around from instrument to instrument. Throughout the piece, each of the four members of the ensemble gets a chance to show off some impressive slide work.

This piece is dedicated to my dear friend Cassie Meredith and was first premiered on November 8, 2020 at her senior recital at Belmont University.
